A 26-year-old Missouri woman was refused EC when she handed her prescription to a pharmacist at a Target store in Fenton, MO, on September 30. The woman was told by the pharmacist, “I won't fill it. It's my right not to fill it.” She was told that she could go to a local Walgreens instead.-- SaveROE.com
I've posted why I have boycotted Wal-Mart since the mid-80s. Now I might choose to stop shopping at Target. The phone numbers above are to the press office at Target. I will make a call and voice my concerns. We currently do not use Target as our pharmacy, but what if our insurance required we use Target? I need to know if the company deserves my business.
One Target shopper has already received a response. It reads in part:
Like many other retailers, Target has a policy that ensures a guest's prescription for emergency contraception is filled, whether at Target or at a different pharmacy, in a timely and respectful manner. This policy meets the health care needs of our guests while respecting the diversity of our team members.
I am all for the diversity of team members. And no one should be refused a job based on their religion. But, if your religion won't let you fill your duties then find a new career. If Target has refusnik pharmacists the company should ensure they are never working without a "fully functional" pharmacist.
