bOING bOING and Internet Editorialists
Phil Gyford and Glassdog have recently leveled a few criticisms at bOING bOING.
It's a measure of bOINg bOING's popularity that anyone even bothers to criticize. I've had problems with some of Cory's posts. Most notably his coverage of photographing Da Bean (Cory responds...).
And that leads me to all bloggers. None of us are journalists in the respect that we have an "expectation of professionalism in reporting, with consideration for truth and ethics." (Wikipedia entry) Most of us have an ax to grind and the desire to spread the word. Few of us bother to correct the record when we are wrong. We have much more in common with early pamphleteers and many modern editorialists.
When I realized that Cory was an editorialist and not a journalist then I began to cut him more slack. I think the media world would do the same if bloggers just said "we're editorialists and columnists."
