A Baseball "Fan"
Stay tuned....it's another baseball post...
In last night's Yankees-Red Sox game a "fan" swung at a Yankees outfielder. The player was simply going for the ball on the field and not leaning into the stands.
Looking at the tape I would bet the fan just wanted to knock off the players' cap and did a lousy job of it. The player, Gary Sheffield, claimed the fan grazed him. Sheffield grabbed the ball and feigned a punch at the fan, threw the ball in, and then returned to yell at the fan.
(1) Sheffield should get a fine from his team for not throwing the ball in before yelling at the fan.
(2) The fan should be permanently banned from all MLB parks. In this case, there should be "one strike- you're out" for all fans who attack players, no matter how poorly.
(3) There was also a beer throwing incident according to Sports Illustrated:
Another fan's beer was spilled in Sheffield's direction while he was shouting at the fan; however, it did not appear to be intentionally thrown.
B.S. I watched the tape a few times and it was obvious the other "fan" flicked his wrist to toss the beer on Sheffield. Ban that guy for the season.
Disclaimer: I am not a Yankees fan. I like the Red Sox, but if that's how their fans act after winning a championship I hope it's another 86 years before they win another.
update: some phonecam pics of Sheffield.
