I, Robot

This is not your father's I, Robot. (I being said father.) This isn't even Isaac Asimov's I, Robot. However, I, Robot, starring Will Smith, is worth seeing at the theatre. You won't be mesmerized by the cinematography. Your life won't be changed by the ethical dilemmas posed. You won't "fall in love all over again."

You will be entertained. If you like Will Smith you will like him here. If you don't like Will Smith you'll be happy that he is much more subdued in this film. If you like special effects and CGI, you'll enjoy yourself. But don't expect any ground breaking special effects. This film does just what it needs and not a stop motion more.

Some reviewers may harp this film lacks the human touch. Forgive them, because they didn't read Asimov. He could see the subtle emotions. Asimov understood that often the ones most afraid of (and most attracted to) robots were the ones who most resembled their metal helpers.

If you are looking for a faithful adaptation of the book --- try to remember that it was a short story collection. This is an action film of the 00s. This isn't Harlan Ellison's tour-de-force script from the 90s (or 80s.) Susan Calvin is not the star of this movie.

If you're looking for a storyline out of Dickens and dialogue out of Shakespere, you're far too picky. The story isn't Asimov, but the plotline is Asimovian. The idea is to get the characters from A to B without hoopla. There is a mystery to be solved. That's the plot and if you enjoy the ride you'll walk away from I' Robot happy you spent your $5.25. I'm happy.

Enjoyed the review, which does what a review ought to: explain some of the basis and backstory, and then evaluate the experience. Most people should be able to understand whether they'll like the movie, no matter their perspective, based on what you have written.

I'll like it, and look forward to seeing the movie.

For the record, Isaacs Asimov was a prolific and successful author. Though he certainly wasn't a highly gifted writer, he is an excellent storyteller with a good amount of conceptions that seem to stand well. In addition, his stories about Elijah Bailey would make good movies; their pretty good mysteries. For any prospective movie maker, I recommend: Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, and Robots of Dawn. Nightfall is probably his best story, just goes to show how a good story can miss as a movie (particularly if poorly made).
