No matter who my daughter thinks should be the star of this ensemble piece I have always felt Sam is the hero of the novel...and now the film.
He is ever-faithful, true, honest, selfless, honor-bound, forthright, and brave. And in film tradition he gets the girl. If that doesn't prove he is a hero what does? :)
I agree, Frodo may have carried the ring, but without Sam he would never have made it. Sam not only carried his own burdens, Mr. Frodo's burdens, and at some points in the book, that of the ring. Sam deserves the ending he gets.

If you like Sam ...you have issues. The evil dudes are the true heros.
lying
evil
treacherous
non good
cool
non trust worthy
they are the true heros

Alex, issues I have by the score.
I think we have radically different ideas about what makes a hero. Still, without the "bad guys" how would we know who the heroes were?
(And I would still rather have Sam on my side than any other character in the movie.)
